[art & culture]

Through time, the Romanian LGBTQIA+ community has been “broken from history” and pushed towards invisibility.

The community wants to know their history, to know how they got here, to understand the generational trauma they bear.

Of the utmost importance – if not utmost necessity – are actions meeting those questions: storytelling events which help us (re) discover our own history; the search and restoration of our place in historical and often hateful archives; and collective introspection within the community for dialogues and understandings.

Art and culture become the tools for magnifying voices and stories, and also pointing at and rewiring social caricatures. Art and culture place us in front of a mirror: they show our true selves, they make us more vulnerable, they give us answers even when we do not know what to ask, they make us understand concepts and feelings that, maybe, were never ours.

[The Scorpion Snuff Box]

Through “The Scorpion Snuff Box – a visual journey into a queer novel,” we envision a journey through the ideas of the novel, in which the author offers a subjective exploration formulated through the surrealist method of objective chance in a “lesbian” universe.

[liberty?]

“Liberty?” is a production by Identity.Education, in premiere; a visual and audio representation of the last 30 years of queer movements in Romania in the form of a docu-concert projected on the Palace of Culture in downtown Timișoara, accompanied by symphonic music specially composed for this occasion.

[transLucid]

It is a performance that explores significant aspects of the lives of transgender individuals in Romania, focusing on the multiple transformations they have experienced.

[(de)tour into our histories]

The community is demanding to know its own history, to understand how it got here, and to comprehend the traumas carried from generation to generation. That’s why we have created an online guided tour that speaks about the places in Timișoara where the community has struggled to exist.

The productions mentioned above, as well as other events part of Pride TM 2023 and LGBTQIA+ History Month 2023, have been part of our curation work for Timișoara 2023 – European Capital of Culture, within the Fluid Perspectives program.

For more details about the cultural program of the year 2023, read here.

The event is part of the Invisible Histories project, funded with a grant of 489,592 RON provided by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants.
