Identity Education x Beta

[un]safe

[un]safe is an immersive installation part of the Beta architecture biennale, which redefines and reclaims public space as a place for community and free expression.

The installation showcases fragments of the public space experiences of various vulnerable communities, within a reimagined urban landscape, and invites participants to modify and interact with the space as a medium for connection and co-creation.

The title [un]safe reflects the duality of the perception of safety in urban environments, highlighting that safety is fragile and subject to change/negotiation. The installation aims to explore how various messages and traces of aggression/microaggressions can be challenged and transformed instead of being hidden or ignored—how they can be replaced with personal perspectives and voices, testimonies of resistance and resilience.

The space is part of the hangout area proposed by the curatorial team for this edition of the biennale, and its multifunctionality transforms it into a place of connection through creativity and collective action.

[how do we create safe spaces?]

A safe space is an environment where people can express themselves freely and without fear of being judged, discriminated against, or even exposed to acts of physical or emotional violence.

The discussion about (un)safe spaces is essential for understanding how we can create more inclusive communities, especially for marginalized groups. Since 2021, we have been actively focused on creating safe spaces, which is why we have implemented two educational projects that address the creation and maintenance of such spaces, encouraging awareness and dialogue.

[safe spaces]

Through this project, we bring closer non-LGBTQIA+ organizations to learn together how to create safe spaces for everyone – whether for team members or beneficiaries.

[we continue to create safe spaces]

With this project, we aim to continue creating safe spaces.
